Philippine disaster appeal

Posted by | Orcadia News | No Comments

Our Wednesday evening young people have been working hard to raise money for the British Red Cross to support the Philippine disaster appeal.

Some of our young people members were aware of the devastation that had recently happened in the Philippines. In discussion with the whole group and making everyone aware it was evident that they wanted to help.

They were happy to give up two of their planned activities to raise money for this cause. They gave up their games night to make felt Sampaguita flowers (the Philippines national flower) with the intention of selling these for a £1 to raise funds. This was an amazing sight to see with everyone taking part and working like a productive team. They all enjoyed this activity and to date have raised £90 on the flowers.

They also gave up their film night to busk in the street of Portobello (outside Sainsbury’s) on a cold November evening for one hour. They sang and sounded wonderful raising a further £130.

We as an organisation are very proud of this groups amazing achievements. *:)

Shelia Gilmore, MP for Edinburgh East, has once again been working with the staff and students at Orcadia Creative Learning Centre!

The students were commissioned to create some stunning seasonal artwork for the front cover of Shelia’s Christmas postcard!  The Orcadia students involved were also pictured on the back of the card.  Jenny Clark from Orcadia said “we are really pleased to have our student’s artwork featured on the postcard – hopefully it will help raise the profile of Orcadia Creative Learning Centre as it will be delivered to hundreds of local constituents!”

Barr Construction and Sainsbury’s support Orcadia!

‘Barr Construction and Sainsbury’s have teamed up to support a local charity dedicated to providing communication arts programmes for young people and adults with learning disabilities.

As part of their commitment to making a positive impact on local communities, we have donated a laptop and two ipads to Orcadia Creative Learning Centre.

Established in 1997, Orcadia Creative Learning Centre provides classes and support for young people and adults with learning disabilities.  The centre uses creative activiites to increase sensory awareness, stimulate thinking, assist movement to improve motor skills and encourage social communication.

With around 200 students with learning disabilities, the charity aims to increase access to creative activities, reducing social isolation and encouraging interaction in group activities.

Gordon Forrester, Operations Manager for Barr Construction, said: “At Barr we enjoy getting involved with local community initiatives.  It’s great to play a part in improving the services available to the community and Barr Construction is proud to join with Sainsbury’s  to support Orcadia’s aims of reducing isolation and creating a stimulating environment for people with learning disabilities in the area.”

Jack Calder, Chairman of Orcadia Creative Learning Centre, said: “Orcadia is thrilled to be working in partnership with Barr Construction.  It is only with the support of companies and individuals raising much needed funds for us that we are able to continue our work with young people and adults with learning difficulties and challenging behaviour.  The equipment provided for our classes is hugely beneficial in further developing the fun, recreational and educational activities at Orcadia Creative Learning Centre.”

Following the conversion of a former hardware shop on the High Street site, retail specialist contract Barr handed over the store to allow the final preparation for the opening.

The 3,000 sq ft store in Portobello, Edinburgh opened to the public on the 19 July 2013 marking the completion of an 11 week project.’
