Who are we

Orcadia CLC is a charity registered in Scotland since 1991. It has been a pioneer of Communication Arts for those with special needs: children, young people and adults. The aim of our programmes is to improve the life and social skills of people with special needs and to seek to do that through programmes in music, dance, drama, movement, mime, puppetry and creative arts. The content of the work varies from small classes of ten, to small groups, to one-to-one contact sessions, all within the context of tailor-made programmes geared to the needs of each individual student.
Orcadia  provides a range of arts and drama based activities aimed at the special needs community, but with a philosophy that these activities are beneficial to the community as a whole. Whilst Orcadia work on their own internally generated activities, they also respond to the needs of the community and specific requests from organisations.
Staff display a phenomenal enthusiasm and passion for Orcadia's work. They have a wonderful working relationship with all students.
Students gain a heightened awareness of themselves and others within the context of personal and social relationships.  Some choose to help others: they encourage others within the group to participate in all the activities, they lead some parts of the group, they help the immobile by giving wheelchair assistance and also help those with limited mobility. Students have created advertising and helped to run social nights.  Some young students grow up with the Arts after School Programme and help out when older.  It is evident they care greatly for each other.
Students attending our Creative Construction Programme work in all area’s within the Centre.  They can be found working in the café, office, music groups (using skills such as singing, creative movement and mime).
In recent years Orcadia has worked with a wide spectrum of schools, colleges and local authority run day centres.

History

The origins of Orcadia Creative Learning Centre date back to April 1997 when it started to lease the Trampoline Centre in Portobello.

The involvement of successive artists, musicians and tutors has, over the years, contributed greatly to the development and success of Orcadia CLC.

Orcadia CLC, which has Charitable Status, was established to provide multi-sensory communication arts programmes for children, young people and adults with special and complex needs.

The trampolines provide a very necessary form of fun, relaxation and exercise which helps to develop co-ordination and balance, complimenting the many programmes which the Centre provides.

The Cafeteria facilities plays an important part in providing a social environment for all parties, encouraging all parties to enjoy each other’s company and communicate in a relaxed atmosphere over a glass of juice, cup of tea and light refreshments.
